Evaluation - Question 2

Throughout this project, one of the most important tasks to me was ensuring that all of my work linked together and worked well in following the conventions of my chosen genre, as I felt that this was a way to guarantee my work would be successful. As a result, when creating my music video and designing my ancillary products, I had to keep in mind the conventions of my genre and the themes of my products. By having my ancillary product designs reflect the general themes of the music video, this would help link all of my work together, as well as help promote my music video and its story. As my video reflected the topics of the song, this would also help the ancillary products give the audience an idea of what the song is about. It is important that the audience is clear on the genre/themes of the song and music video, as this will inform them on what they are buying.

The main way that I was able to link all of my products together was through the imagery used. The music video was based on a group of young people having a party, which included themes of drinking. As this was the biggest symbol in my video, I decided that these images should be reflected within my ancillary products as not only would this help to sell/advertise the music video, but it would also mean that it would advertise the song as partying and having fun is also the main theme of the song (Twice - Catfish and the Bottlemen). When it came to the creation of my digipak and magazine advert, I decided to create a hand drawn image as opposed to a photograph as I felt this was quite a unique design and would help make it stand out against others of its kind. Not only this, but it also meant that it linked to my company logo as this was also hand drawn and therefore made it a theme of the company. I decided to use the same image for the front cover of my digipak and the magazine advert but change it slightly, as the advert is advertising the digipak, and so it would make it easy to find for any interested buyers.

I was also able to connect my ancillary products through the use of font. By using an emboldened, italic, capitalised font on both products, it helped to link them together and seem part of the same series as this a recurrent theme. I also decided to use white font on both of my ancillary tasks as not only did this help my work appear more coherent, but also I felt that it created an interesting aesthetic as it make it look as though the portions of the image that were covered with text were cut out. The text does differ slight in that the font on the digipak is serif, whereas the font on the advert is sans serif, however I enjoy this aspect as I feel that it helps to differentiate between the two products as the images are identical.

Overall, I believe that I have been successful in creating my main and ancillary tasks, and the combination of the two has been extremely effective. The reason I feel this way is that my work all links together and looks to be a coherent series of products, both in terms of aesthetic and the themes that it covers. I also feel that I have created a series of work that would be popular with my target audience, and so have been successful in creating a piece of work that follows conventions of the given genre.
